Sally & Todd are married

Today with the cloud releasing much needed hydration to a draught stricken Nelson, I had the honour of capturing the marriage of Sally & Todd in-front of their family and friends in a super relaxed and beautiful villa in Nelson. The colours were gorgeous, the setting was perfect and there were smiles a plenty.

My days are now filled working with enthusiastic students at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology sharing my experience and passion for Lens-Based media and Critical Studies on the Bachelor of Arts and Design, therefore I haven’t been sharing as much of my own photography work. I would like to thank Sally and Todd for sharing their day with me enabling me to keep my finger on the shutter!

I always shoot with Canon, today I had the 5DM4, 24-70mm 2.8, 600EX-II RT speedlite and a CP-E4 Battery Pack.

Light Nelson 2018

Creatives join forces to bring us a world class event in Nelson on a dark winters night. Light, music, mystery and fun, I was there to capture some of it with the camera.

In a collaboration of art, science and technology, many artists have let their creativity loose through a range of innovative media including laser technology, digital imagery, performance and music with high levels of interaction and surprise for the viewer. - Light Nelson

Macro Photography - Close up in a hill top garden.

One beautiful Nelson Sunday evening I took my new Macro lens out to play at a beautiful garden belonging to family friends. The light was right, the colours were rich and the textures were sharp.  Nothing rocks my boat more than playing with my camera and light.

Special thanks to Mike & Judy for letting me play in their pretty garden.

New Fashion Team at Admire

The upcoming March edition of Admire Magazine (out this Saturday!) marks the first fashion spread that I have coordinated. I have taken on previous stylist and friend Sonya Leusink Sladen's role as Fashion Stylist as well as continuing on with the photography of the spread. I have been very lucky to have hired a wonderful assistant to help me style and keep my head together on the day of the shoot, Hannah Beard.

Hannah Beard is a 25-year-old who has a strong passion and desire for Fashion. She moved to Nelson in March 2016 after living in Wellington for 8 years where she studied fashion design and business studies at Massey University. After her studies Hannah worked for two children’s clothing boutiques where she began her fashion career in retail, online sales and merchandising. This then lead to opportunities in design, management and directing photo shoots.

Richmond Antiques & Curios

Sitting on the corner of Salisbury road and Queen street Richmond is a store that doubles as a museum and meeting place for collectors and historians alike. Its an interesting and quirky place to visit with friendly staff who have many regular's come for a weekly visit.

Last month I took my camera and spent a morning with Logan and Maria at Richmond Antiques and Curios

The sky was grey but inside Richmond Antiques & Curios the mood was anything but grey. During my visit a number of towns folk came in with their smiles, charm and yarns to share.

Maria Martin tells me that she brought the family business from the original owner, antique enthusist Rob Packer. Rob who still works in the current store three days a week established  Richmond Antiques & Curios in 1987 beside the Arthur Wakefield. Rob works with owner Maria and full timer Logan who says he is "passionate about all things archeological, dug up and broken"

Everything I look at when I'm browsing this wonderful shop, makes me think about the stories these items could tell. Who were the people that used them? what was the environment and era that they came from like? This gorgeous bed must've looked amazing all dressed in its best with hand embroidered sheets and sewn blankets.

I could set up a bed and lay in here just looking at the walls all day, the textured and colourful walls reflect a by-gone era where life was very different to what it is now in 2017.

When I was younger, with my passion for photography blooming I would approach Antique shop owners and ask if they would mind if I took some pictures inside their amazing room filled still-lives. I would feel like a five year old in a toy shop excitedly getting high from the experience of capturing images bathed in Renaissance light.

The final items I would like to share with you have a special story behind them. These two old and tattered Indian dolls belonged to a little girl called May.  May lived during the Indain rebellion wars of 1854 between the British and the Sepoys where she was a member of a British Lieutenants family. During a raid where an entire town was massacred the childs nanny hid the girl with her dolls, telling her not to move or make a sound. The nanny sacrificed her own life and saved the little girls.  All that remains today of the girl and the story are these dolls, far away from that time and world, now resting in newspaper at Richmond Antiques.

Family shoot - Sarah & Hana for their mum

Choosing presents can be difficult especially for parents, you want to give them something meaningful and special, not generic. So often gift sets and empty photo frames gather dust or are re-gifted. This Christmas sister's Sarah and Hana had a lovely idea for a special present for their mum, they surprised her with family photos. This was a thoughtful gift that she absolutely loved, and will enjoy for years to come.

On a lovely December evening at sunset Sarah, Hana, their families and I met at The Boulder Bank in Nelson where we had a relaxed and fun family portrait session. I would like to thank them for sharing their precious photographs with us.

Maddy

Last summer I was introduced to Judith Hutchings, a doll collector who lives in Wakefield. Ever since, I have been dreaming of a "doll themed shoot" with the perfect doll-like model.  With my studies now behind me and newly graduated I had the time, and then along come Maddy... my model the dream becomes a reality. With her beautiful big doll-like eyes and porcelain skin 12 year old Maddy transformed in to the prettiest doll.

Special thanks to the incredibly talented makeup artist Angela McGuire, and hair stylist Ema Soole for the gorgeous hair-up.

Extra special thanks to Judith Hutchings for her hospitality and incredible dolls. Look for a blog post detailing Judith's fabulous doll collection coming soon...

Sarah, Georgie, Arjun & Tom

Wherever I go I'm always looking at the world through photographers eyes, everyone and everything is a potential photograph, its a wonderful feeling. A few weeks back I was in the Rockshop with my son and couldn't stop staring at a beautiful group of teenage friends playing the guitars.  I was thinking how wonderful they would be to photograph and hoping they wouldn't think I was a weirdo for staring! I went up to them as I do, introduced myself and asked if they would let me take their photographs one evening over summer.
Come Tuesday 13th Dec it happened, they all met at my place, four teens, my two kids and I loaded in to my van and went for a cruise up Wakapuaka Cemetery and the Boulder Bank. The teens were so natural their misfit style and carefree nature was a joy to capture - I was in my element on a windy summers evening.
