Celebrating Beautiful Women of Nelson

It has been a dream of mine to take portraits of women from different cultures wearing their traditional dress. That dream became a reality upon meeting the vivacious Jacqui Holmes, who I meet as a potential model for a fashion shoot I was organising. We began chatting - as with Jacqui that is something she is extremely good at, I could talk to her for hours! I told her about my dream and she said lets make it happen "I have a church full of beautiful women from different countries"

Together Jacqui and I organised a morning of pampering, hair, makeup, food and photography for the women of Victory Church. Our intention for it -  a time of blending, pampering, cultures mixing, yummy food and togetherness.

Many of the women from Victory church are refugees from Myanmar - Burma, they have been persecuted for their beliefs and have fled to New Zealand making Nelson their home. Jacqui say's at Victory Church everyone in the congregation still has their individual cultural values and customs and this morning is a wonderful example of that. The women came with their traditional dress and were so brave in front of the camera - some even playing up for it!

Ema and Janaya gave the women beautiful hair styles while Indie did an amazing job doing makeup for them. Karina a photography student at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology covered the event capturing behind the scenes images as well as beautiful group and individual portraits around the venue.

It was a wonderful morning with smiles all around, lots of laughter and togetherness. I want to extend my thanks firstly to all the ladies who were brave enough to participate and let us make you feel special and capture your photographs. I want to thank the businesses and individual stylists who took time out of their day to come and donate their services and finally Jacqui who opened her home to us all.

Maddy

Last summer I was introduced to Judith Hutchings, a doll collector who lives in Wakefield. Ever since, I have been dreaming of a "doll themed shoot" with the perfect doll-like model.  With my studies now behind me and newly graduated I had the time, and then along come Maddy... my model the dream becomes a reality. With her beautiful big doll-like eyes and porcelain skin 12 year old Maddy transformed in to the prettiest doll.

Special thanks to the incredibly talented makeup artist Angela McGuire, and hair stylist Ema Soole for the gorgeous hair-up.

Extra special thanks to Judith Hutchings for her hospitality and incredible dolls. Look for a blog post detailing Judith's fabulous doll collection coming soon...

Victoria - KILT Clothing

This year as part of the final year of my Bachelor in Arts & Media I worked on a photography fashion campaign for a NZ Designer. At the beginning of the year I contacted labels I would like to work with for my project. KILT Clothing got on board and let me work with their awesome range of clothing. In total this year I completed nineteen shoots, eight of which were for KILT. It was an amazing experience collaborating with so many talented people, hair and makeup stylists along with a team of lovely models. We were lucky to shoot in some wonderful locations too.

Eliana 1900's Wedding at Fairfield House

On Sunday I had a very special photo shoot, it was special for a few reasons:
1 - The model was my own daughter Eliana, who has been asking me for a long time now if she can be a model for me for a proper shoot.
2 - I am a huge history enthusiast, and this shoot was based on a very early 1900's (pre 1920s) wedding dress that my friend had lent me.
3 - We were lucky to be able to shoot inside the Ballroom at Nelson's Fairfield house, a grand old home which I have spent a lot of my childhood inside and out, in the hills and gardens surrounding. My Aunt Nancy's ashes were also scattered in the gardens with a special remembrance seat and tree planted, along with a dear friend Graham.

This shoot also excited me as I was lucky to collaborate with Florist Adrienne Matthews of All About Flowers. Adrienne is very talented, she had well researched the era and created an amazing work of art - bouquet which was the cherry on top, and completed the look.

Ema and Angela also worked hard and created an authentic early 1900s bridal look for Eliana who at nine years only just fitted the dress - just goes to show how much smaller we were 100 years ago!

I have processed the photos with a vintage look to try and recreate them as if they were taken 100 years ago. It was so much fun creating this shoot, look out for a 1980s themed one coming up in the next month...

Ling

Today I had a fun collaboration with a great group of ladies, making over gorgeous Ling.

A massive thank you to you all, you really are amazing. I do believe working together with a group of creatives who specialize in and love what they do can together make magic happen a total team effort, I am privileged.

Georgia

I really enjoyed this studio shoot with an awesome team, including some new creatives I had not worked with before, but will certainly be again! Angela of Beauty by Angela worked her magic creating my vision for this series which was muted and pale,  the makeup blew me away! Ema did a great job on Georgias hair - but then I ruined it experimenting with a leaf blower (note: blowing hair for a shoot is not as simple as you would think - about 100 shots attempted not one worked!) I decided to ditch the blowing hair idea, unfortunately the hair was a bit of a mess after that, so Georgia and I had to do our best without a hairdresser or even a brush/comb!

I have experimented with editing out the movable wall and leaving it in the composition, with this being the third mock-up experimentation for my studio project (Fashion Photography for a NZ label)

The amazing wall artworks are actually vintage tourism posters from Nostalgia Antiques
