Light Nelson 2018

Creatives join forces to bring us a world class event in Nelson on a dark winters night. Light, music, mystery and fun, I was there to capture some of it with the camera.

In a collaboration of art, science and technology, many artists have let their creativity loose through a range of innovative media including laser technology, digital imagery, performance and music with high levels of interaction and surprise for the viewer. - Light Nelson

"When you create a black and white photograph, you create something that is abstract and strikingly real at the same time. Black and white photography is strange that way. It is perhaps this abstractness that makes black and white images so intriguing and timeless." - Ritsh Saint

Its not often if ever, that I process my photographs in black and white.  This shoot was different, it was planned to be black and white right from the start. I wanted to try something other than my usual style and Im really pleased with how it turned out. It is simple and beautiful. Twins Scarlett & Poppi are simply gorgeous and working with them is a pure pleasure. Hope you all enjoy this shoot as much as I did.

Richmond Antiques & Curios

Sitting on the corner of Salisbury road and Queen street Richmond is a store that doubles as a museum and meeting place for collectors and historians alike. Its an interesting and quirky place to visit with friendly staff who have many regular's come for a weekly visit.

Last month I took my camera and spent a morning with Logan and Maria at Richmond Antiques and Curios

The sky was grey but inside Richmond Antiques & Curios the mood was anything but grey. During my visit a number of towns folk came in with their smiles, charm and yarns to share.

Maria Martin tells me that she brought the family business from the original owner, antique enthusist Rob Packer. Rob who still works in the current store three days a week established  Richmond Antiques & Curios in 1987 beside the Arthur Wakefield. Rob works with owner Maria and full timer Logan who says he is "passionate about all things archeological, dug up and broken"

Everything I look at when I'm browsing this wonderful shop, makes me think about the stories these items could tell. Who were the people that used them? what was the environment and era that they came from like? This gorgeous bed must've looked amazing all dressed in its best with hand embroidered sheets and sewn blankets.

When I was younger, with my passion for photography blooming I would approach Antique shop owners and ask if they would mind if I took some pictures inside their amazing room filled still-lives. I would feel like a five year old in a toy shop excitedly getting high from the experience of capturing images bathed in Renaissance light.

The final items I would like to share with you have a special story behind them. These two old and tattered Indian dolls belonged to a little girl called May.  May lived during the Indain rebellion wars of 1854 between the British and the Sepoys where she was a member of a British Lieutenants family. During a raid where an entire town was massacred the childs nanny hid the girl with her dolls, telling her not to move or make a sound. The nanny sacrificed her own life and saved the little girls.  All that remains today of the girl and the story are these dolls, far away from that time and world, now resting in newspaper at Richmond Antiques.

Family shoot - Sarah & Hana for their mum

Choosing presents can be difficult especially for parents, you want to give them something meaningful and special, not generic. So often gift sets and empty photo frames gather dust or are re-gifted. This Christmas sister's Sarah and Hana had a lovely idea for a special present for their mum, they surprised her with family photos. This was a thoughtful gift that she absolutely loved, and will enjoy for years to come.

On a lovely December evening at sunset Sarah, Hana, their families and I met at The Boulder Bank in Nelson where we had a relaxed and fun family portrait session. I would like to thank them for sharing their precious photographs with us.

Admire Fashion July 2016

It was a romantic revival this month for July Fashion, with inspiration coming from the "beautiful age" of Belle Epoque which was the name given in France for the period of history which went from roughly 1871 to the start of world war one (1914).

It themed in well with this months up-cycling issue and got creative juices flowing. Hair Stylist Lauren Lewis crafted a high fashion dramatic hair feature in model Michelle's hair, while makeup Artist Indie Welsh applied dark burgundy lips which added to the drama.

We shot at the stunning Nelson Castle - Warwick House, which completed the theme. Hope you enjoy the spread as much as we did creating it!
With special thanks to the Advertisers and team:

Jess

Today I had a really relaxed and enjoyable day collaborating with Jess, Ema & Anja, we had lots of girly fun creating these looks!

I would like to thank Jess for modelling for me and letting us get a bit creative and taking her out of her comfort zone, as well as welcoming us out to her beautiful rural home in Brightwater on such a bright sunny day.

I did what I used to be so scared of doing.. shot in harsh midday sun. Instead of avoiding it, I embrace it, work with it and don't fight it. When working in harsh sun like this I always tell the models to close their eyes until I say 'open' for a few secs then close again. This stops any headaches.

Marina

I am excited to share with you the second of my studio experiments for my 3rd year studio project - 'Fashion Photography for a New Zealand Label'
The label I am going to photograph has a strong 'Kiwi' theme, supporting New Zealand in a wide variety of ways. It is important that I promote the NZ aspect of the label, so I have experimented with different ways in which I can approach this. With the first shoot, I played with props - nostalgic kiwiana icons such as souvenir tea towels, apple crates & Nelson Photo News magazines. This time I have taken New Zealand paintings, prints & photography, placing the model beside them. With each composition I have chosen a dress which 'speaks' to the image, creating unity.

Marina, looks stunning in these dresses, she is a fabulous talent with a beautiful grace to her,

I always welcome feedback, so please comment any thoughts.

With thanks my amazing team of contributors:

Kristen - 1960s & 1970s Kiwiana

This year, the final one of my BA in Arts & Media at NMIT I have created my own brief,

"Create a Fashion Campaign for an New Zealand Designer"

I sent out over 30 emails to different NZ designers and received a great response.  The label I have chosen to work with (under wraps until the end of year reveal) is awesome, I am so exited to be able to photograph their fashion.

As part of my experimentation process I have mocked up different styles of Fashion Spread. I am excited to reveal the first of many... for my 703 brief.

A studio shoot with 1960s/70s Kiwiana theme. I'm sure many of you will remember some of these golden oldie props, the old dial phone, Nelson Photo News et :)

I hadn't been to Cable Bay for a few years so we set of with the camera in the late afternoon sun. Emma & Anton's Wedding

On Saturday the 28th November 2015 I was privileged to shoot the wedding of Emma and Anton. In the months leading up to the big day the bride and I met up and talked about pose ideas, the plans and how the day would flow. We watched the weather reports like crazy and although the wind was blowing a gale the weather was beautiful.

The day started for me at the mother of the brides home where I captured the brides maids and then the beautiful bride get hair and makeup done. Even the wee flower girls got a splash of lip gloss and blusher.

I headed out to the wedding venue to see a relaxed Groom and his party eagerly awaiting the bride who turned up in style, I just loved the blue car! Family and friends watched while the happy couple said their vows and became Mr and Mrs.. while the wind blew.

The bridal party and I went to Isel Park to take some portraits which the wind kindly paused for followed by reception back at the venue.

What touched me about this wedding was the amount of love for friends, family and absent loved ones, all of whom were remembered. What a relaxed and beautiful wedding, where everyone was included and everything was planned for such smooth running.

Admire 'Favourite Things' Product Photography Dec/Jan Bumper Edition

Stylist Sonya Leusink-Sladen and I have had a lot of fun re-vamping the product pages for Admire Magazine. We decided to create beautiful still life pages with them, rather than clear white cut outs of objects on pages. This we believe is more meaningful for us and the readers, creating high quality imagery which sells quality products.  We are both very proud of what we have achieved together creating what I call works of art in their own right on the pages. I hope you enjoy them too, Nelson and Richmond have a lot of quality locally sourced and produced, as well as internationally hand picked  products. We are very lucky to live in not only a little slice of paradise but also have our cake and eat it too!

Beautiful villa charm in a lovely Nelson holiday home

On Tuesday last week I was asked to take photos of this lovely home for Nelson Holiday Homes. Beautifully cared for and owned by a Graphic Designer this home would be the perfect home away from home while you are staying in Nelson. Its great for kids with trampoline, large yard and bedrooms and next to a park and playground.

These photographs were taken using HDR technique which involves using a tripod and taking multiple exposures and then layering them in Photoshop to get an even exposure inside the house and out, looking through the windows. Although it can look a bit 'fake' it gives the viewer a better idea of what the house looks like.
