Trogonoptera brookiana  -   Rajah Brooke's birdwing This is a male birdwing butterfly from the rainforests of the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Natuna. The magnificent Rajah Brooke's Birdwing was discovered on Borneo in 1855 by the legendary explorer and naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace. It is widely distributed throughout Borneo, Sumatra, Palawan and the central states of West Malaysia, and in a few areas is very abundant, but populations are quite localised. It also occurs as a scarce species in Thailand. Sadly the butterflies are killed in vast numbers, mainly by Orang Asli children, paid a pittance for the dead specimens by dealers who sell them on to gift shops. The majority are badly damaged because the children are unskilled with butterfly nets, and often use crude methods of killing - sometimes the butterflies are attracted to a sticky "bait" which glues their wings to the ground, or sometimes they are killed by throwing small stones at them. Morpho Helenor -  Common Blue Morpho As its common name implies, the blue morpho butterfly’s wings are bright blue, edged with black. The blue morpho is among the largest butterflies in the world, with wings spanning from five to eight inches. Their vivid, iridescent blue colouring is a result of the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings, which reflect light. The underside of the morpho’s wings, on the other hand, is a dull brown colour with many eyespots, providing camouflage against predators such as birds and insects when its wings are closed. When the blue Morpho flies, the contrasting bright blue and dull brown colours flash, making it look like the Morpho is appearing and disappearing.   Blue Morphos live in the tropical forests of Latin America from Mexico to Colombia. Adults spend most of their time on the forest floor and in the lower shrubs and trees of the understory with their wings folded. Ref: http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/species/blue-butterfly

Admire Fashion: March 2017

"The change of season seems an apt time to also have a change here at Admire Magazine. As we welcome in autumn and all the glorious colours that come with it, we also mark a change in our fashion team. Sonya Leusink Sladen has stepped down from styling our regular fashion spreads, which are put together here in Nelson - but will continue to offer us style advice in her monthly column. Stepping up to the styling challenge is our fashion photographer Jessica Shirley, who this month has styled her first fashion spread for Admire (along with photographing it), with help from style assistant Hannah Beard." - Vanessa Phillips, Editor.

Nostalgia

I have always loved to visit antique shops, they are such quirky places filled with all sorts of relics from the pasts and treasures. One such place is Nostalgia, a shop on my street specialising in antiques, collectables, retro and vintage.
Nostalgia owner Christine Ross has a special passion for items we grew up with, things our parents and grandparents had. Her business began as a hobby, where her home was filled with collectables but now while there are a few special items she can't part with, everything she finds goes to her shop where she can enjoy them with others.

"People will walk out with a smile on their face - having had a rush of memories triggered by visiting Nostalgia"

Christine is always on the look out to purchase items for Nostalgia so if you have anything retro, vintage, antique or collectable pop in and see her.

You can visit Nostalgia at 50 Vanguard Street, Nelson
Shop hours are: Mon - Fri: 10:30 - 5pm
                                    Sat: 10:30 - 4pm

Last week I took my camera into Nostalgia and immersed myself in a time gone by, capturing photographs inside this special shop.

Amiee Miller - Life coaching, website photography

It was a pure pleasure working with Aimee creating photographs for her website, this mum of four is a total inspiration, I highly recommend her - she just oozes motivation!

Here is a wee bio about Aimee from her website.

"My name is Aimee I am a Life Coach, fitness junkie, whole food enthusiast and mother to four amazing children aged 2-9.
After having children women often need to regain the motivation to get back on track with nutrition, wellbeing and general life balance. I love supporting women to reclaim their energy and positivity for life.
Maybe it is a total life edit that you need or just help getting past one obstacle that has been impossible to overcome on your own.
I believe a happy mum is the core of a happy family. Its simple really....the happier and healthier mums are, the happier and healthier their children, partners and families become."

Georgia

I really enjoyed this studio shoot with an awesome team, including some new creatives I had not worked with before, but will certainly be again! Angela of Beauty by Angela worked her magic creating my vision for this series which was muted and pale,  the makeup blew me away! Ema did a great job on Georgias hair - but then I ruined it experimenting with a leaf blower (note: blowing hair for a shoot is not as simple as you would think - about 100 shots attempted not one worked!) I decided to ditch the blowing hair idea, unfortunately the hair was a bit of a mess after that, so Georgia and I had to do our best without a hairdresser or even a brush/comb!

I have experimented with editing out the movable wall and leaving it in the composition, with this being the third mock-up experimentation for my studio project (Fashion Photography for a NZ label)

The amazing wall artworks are actually vintage tourism posters from Nostalgia Antiques

Admire 'Favourite Things' Product Photography Dec/Jan Bumper Edition

Stylist Sonya Leusink-Sladen and I have had a lot of fun re-vamping the product pages for Admire Magazine. We decided to create beautiful still life pages with them, rather than clear white cut outs of objects on pages. This we believe is more meaningful for us and the readers, creating high quality imagery which sells quality products.  We are both very proud of what we have achieved together creating what I call works of art in their own right on the pages. I hope you enjoy them too, Nelson and Richmond have a lot of quality locally sourced and produced, as well as internationally hand picked  products. We are very lucky to live in not only a little slice of paradise but also have our cake and eat it too!
